Sports Day Celebration and Healthy Sideline Snacks

Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016 was Sports Day in Canada. In Burlington, we celebrated the day by joining together with many different sporting groups at Haber Recreation Centre where community memebers could participate in a variety of  “Try It” sessions including; wrestling, pickleball, soccer, lacrosse, badminton, gymnastics, cricket and many more.

Healthy Kids has been working with local sports groups to promote and educate about healthy snack choices and reducing sugar-sweetened beverages. Our main message: children should be rehydrating with water and refuelling with fruit and low sugar snacks.

For this event, Healthy Kids partnered with the Hayden H.S. grade 12 Nutrition and Health classes to create healthy sideline snack recipes. The students came up with five delicious, low sugar muffins that could easily be pre-made and frozen for snacks. Check out these recipes below, which all had nothing but rave reviews! Thank you to Susan Hammond and her classes for partnering with us for this event.

Remember – when it comes to thirst choose water first!
