It takes a village to raise a child.”…African Proverb

In March 2014, the Parks and Recreation Department applied for the Healthy Kids Community Challenge (The Challenge) through the Province of Ontario – Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC). The City of Burlington’s application was successful and was selected as one of 45 communities across Ontario to participate.  We are pleased to announce that The Ministry will provide the City of Burlington up to $1,125,000 in one-time funding for the period of April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2018, or up to $375,000/year for three years.

The Challenge is in response to Ontario’s Action Plan – Healthy Kids Strategy  and its goal to reduce childhood obesity through community-led planning and action.  Under our leadership, the City will receive funding and support to implement local activities based on an assigned theme every nine months. Themes will be related to healthy eating and physical activity through various community partnerships and will address the risk or protective factors that are known to lead to, or prevent, childhood obesity (e.g. eating a healthy breakfast).

This unique strategy brings together all parts of the community including schools, families, organizations and public authorities, in an integrated approach toward preventing childhood obesity at the community level. It changes the local and universal environment, behaviours and social norms step-by-step, using social marketing and scientific evaluation, to make sure the program has political support and the involvement of all sectors, particularly the public and private sectors.  It is essential that the city work in partnership with other organizations in the delivery of this strategy across the entire community.
